Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa University began with the establishment of the Tirtayasa Education Foundation on October 1 1980 based on Notarial Deed No: 1 of 1980, then it was refined and reaffirmed with the Notarial Deed of Mrs. R. Arie Soetardjo, Number 1, March 3 1986.
Sultan Ageng Tiratayasa University has the task of providing academic, professional and/or vocational education. Carry out the development of higher education by implementing the Tri Dharma of Higher Education which includes education, research and community service.

The word Tirtayasa (Sanskrit which means flowing water) is taken from the name of a National Hero from Banten, namely Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa (Presidential Decree of the Republic of Indonesia Number: 045/TK/1070). The real name of Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa is Abul Fatih Abdul Fatah, the fourth heir to the throne of the Sultanate of Banten. Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa was awarded the National Hero decoration because he persistently resisted Dutch colonialism and succeeded in bringing glory and glory to the Sultanate of Banten.
The initial step of the Tirtayasa Education Foundation was to establish the College of Law (STIH) in 1981, followed by the establishment of the College of Teacher Training and Education (STKIP) in 1982. Simultaneously with the founding of STKIP, the Krakatau Steel Cilegon Foundation founded the College of Engineering (STT), which was later STT. joined the Tirtayasa Education Foundation in preparation for the establishment of Tirtayasa University Serang-Banten.
Tirtayasa Serang Banten University is a merger of STIH, STT and STKIP based on the Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia Number; 0596/0/1984, dated 28 November 1984, the status of each high school changed to Faculty of Law, Faculty of Engineering, and Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP).
In line with the hopes of the people of Banten, from year to year Tirtayasa University develops the establishment of new faculties and study programs marked by the establishment of the Faculty of Agriculture based on the Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia Number: 0123/0/1989, dated March 8 1989, and the Faculty of Economics with the Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture Number: : 0331/0/1989, dated 30 May 1989.
The socio-political changes that have occurred in Indonesia have influenced the changes that have occurred at Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa University. Based on the development of Untirta as a private university which is less significant and the spirit of the reform era has encouraged the University Leadership and Faculty Leaders within Tirtayasa University as well as the Management of the Tirtayasa Education Foundation and the support of Banten figures to propose the creation of Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa University to the central government through the Department of National Education . Furthermore, on October 13 1999, RI Presidential Decree Number; 130/1999 concerning Preparation for State Universities at Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa University. Due to the hard work and sincerity of the Untirta leadership and the Foundation’s management, in 2001 based on the Decree of the President of the Republic of Indonesia Number: 32 dated 19 March 2001, Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa University was officially designated as the definitive State University.
Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa University as a new state university continues to strive to make changes and improvements, both in the institutional, academic, and student affairs and collaboration fields.
The fundamental changes in the field of organization and work procedures were the enactment of Minister of National Education Decree Number 023/J43/d.1/SK/IV/2003 and the Statute of Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa University based on Minister of National Education Decree Number 10 of 2007. Likewise changes and improvements in the academic field, especially the establishment of faculties and new departments, development of educational facilities and infrastructure, development and improvement of the quality of lecturers and other educational staff, development of ICT to support education and excellent academic services, development and improvement of library facilities towards e-libraries and e-journals, strengthening the academic atmosphere on campus , as well as improving the quality of education through a quality assurance and self-evaluation system ( Quality Assurance and Self-evaluation ).
